As you know I got my RN license.... which is great, except the fact that the hospital has this policy that we have to go through a residency program. Sounds in theory like a great thing, but its NOT! What it entails is a class 3 days a week, and a shift on the floor one day. The classes make you want to POKE YOUR EYES OUT! Its like going back to the first semester of nursing school, except you already know what they are teaching. I swear, yesterday, I thought I was going to have to leave the class and admit myself in a psych ward I was so irritated. I tried to get out of this horrible little torture test by talking to my boss, but thanks to hospital policy, no such luck. Thank goodness I only have 4 classes left to endure, because otherwise I might go certifiably insane! On a brighter note, at least when I do get to work actually as a nurse in the ER its fulfilling. I have noticed that my prayers since taking my boards have SERIOUSLY changed. Instead of praying "please please let me pass this test" I am now praying "Dear God, PLEASE dont let me kill someone today!" Sounds kind of scary right? Well... heres an example for this change. On DAY ONE as an RN, I had this poor patient come in with DOUBLE Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms. And for those of you who dont know what that is, in short, its BAD NEWS BEARS. I mean verge of death bad news. Because at any moment you could burst a place on your Aorta and bleed to death in seconds. So needless to say I was a little freaked out. So we had to get this patient care flighted to Tuscon, because none of our Drs would even think about doing surgery on her. So here I am, a completely baby nurse, and Im preparing to give report to the nurse at the other hospital. But of course the nurse doesnt call... THE BEST VASCULAR SURGEON IN THE STATE CALLS ME!!!! AAAAAAH! I had no idea what to say, I mean we learn in school how to give good report to drs, but its a totally different ballgame when you are actually there in the moment. I just told him everything I knew. He was probably sitting on the other end of the line thinking "Will this girl ever shut up?" Oh well, I did that and his only directions for me were to intubate her (which means put a tube down her throat to help her breathe). So I then go to my doc that we have and tell him we need to do this. Stupid me with no paper in my hand or anything, is standing there and our Dr starts listing all of these super duper hard core drugs to give her and the doses and what order and how.... I was like holy moly!! So I frantically grab a pen and start scribbling all of this info on my hand and pray I do it right..... long story short, in the end it all went fine and we got the lady in the chopper fine. But my point is, that was just day ONE... and at any moment my patient could have died on my watch. Its a lot to jump head first into. But oh well, its great experience and at least I know I am going to really make a difference in some peoples lives.
Off of the nursing topic, Jason got his CDI! YAY! Most of you probably dont know what that means, but basically it means he gets to check everybody elses work off. Which gives him much more respect. Its a lot of work to get too, you have to have experience and get all of the higher ups to sign off on it. Then he had to take this test and he HAD to make a 100% to pass. But he did, and we are very proud. YAY JASON!
Hmmmm... what else is going on? We have gone shooting a couple of times and that has been pretty darn fu
n. I shot a 50 cal gun and I ACTUALLY HIT MY TARGET. Look at the size of this thing. Its like a cannon when it goes off.... but I must say its kind of exhilarating to shoot. We have more fun pics and a good video from us shooting, but I dont have it uploaded yet so I will have to post it later. After we went shooting this past weekend we all decided to go back to Jason and I's house and that I would cook dinner. So the Marines and I went to Walmart and they bought SEVEN pork tenderloins for me to cook, and TEN pounds of potatoes for me to mash. I must say that 7 tenderloins is definitely more of a challange to cook than one. But do you know that those 9 guys, me, and another wife, ate ALL ten lbs of mashed potatoes and all but one serving of pork! It was insane to see how much those guys were eating. But at least I know they like my cooking. It was definitely a fun night.
This Friday OUR FAMILIES ARE COMING TO VISIT! YAY! They will all be here for the air show that the base is doing. We are really excited! Plus, the grand finale of the show is the marines SHATTERING the world record for the Largest wall of FIRE ever created. It is going to be TWO MILES long and 150 ft high! I think its probably going to raise the temp of the whole city. But it will definitely be be cool. I will take lots of pictures when everyone is here!
Well, thats about all that is going on right now. I have got to get ready for bed because its an early morning for me tomorrow! Hope everyone is happy and healthy!
Lots of Love!
